Event at the archaeological site of Choirokoitia on the occasion
of the International Day for Monuments and Sites
The 18th April was designated in 1983 by
UNESCO as International Day for Monuments and Sites, following a proposal by
ICOMOS, a non-governmental International Council on Monuments and Sites,
responsible for the preservation and protection of world cultural heritage.
Since 1983, the 18th April is celebrated every year with events
aiming at raising public awareness on issues related to archaeological heritage, and all forms of culture, in
general.
Within this framework, an event will
take place at the Archaeological Site of Choirokoitia, on the 24th
of April 2015, at 17.30, to celebrate the gradual implementation of the Master
Plan of this very important Neolithic site, the creation of new routes within
the archaeological site, and the installation of new informative panels, sponsored by the French
Company TOTAL in
collaboration with the French Institute of Cyprus. During the event, guided tours will take
place, with the participation of scouts from
the Cyprus Scouts Association, as well as students from the American
International School in Cyprus, who took
part in the tree planting expedition for the restoration of the natural
landscape, following the fire in 2013. A reception will follow in the
square of Choirokoitia, courtesy of the Community Council. The event is being
held under the auspices of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works,
Mr Marios Demetriades.
The event aims at highlighting the need to establish
an appropriate framework, which will secure the protection, preservation and
promotion of the Archaeological Sites and Monuments in Cyprus. Such a framework
will also create the basis for the conduct of research and interactive
activities for children, young people, students and researchers.
